Not able to use Coil library in Android View project with mixed Java-Kotlin code

I am trying to use the Coil image loading library in an Android View project with mixed Java-Kotlin source code.

I am following this guide:

https://coil-kt.github.io/coil/java_compatibility/

I have added the library to my gradle app file:

 implementation("io.coil-kt.coil3:coil:3.2.0")
 implementation("io.coil-kt.coil3:coil-network-okhttp:3.2.0")

However, the compiler raises an incompatible types error in the following Java code.

ImageRequest request = new ImageRequest.Builder(context)
    .data("https://example.com/image.jpg")
    .crossfade(true)
    .target(imageView)
    .build();
imageLoader.enqueue(request);

error: incompatible types: ImageView cannot be converted to Target .target(imageView)

and in the following one the compiler is not able to find any ImageLoaders at all

ImageRequest request = new ImageRequest.Builder(context)
    .data("https://example.com/image.jpg")
    .size(1080, 1920)
    .build();
Drawable drawable = ImageLoaders.executeBlocking(imageLoader, request).getImage().asDrawable(context.resources);

Am I missing anything?

You're missing import coil3.request.target. A number of ImageRequest functions were moved to extension functions in Coil 3.x since we can't reference platform types like ImageView in common multiplatform code.

The import "coil3.request.target" does not exist, not in Java.

The only solution that I've found is to import then coil3.target.ImageViewTarget;

and use it in the following way:

ImageRequest request = new ImageRequest.Builder(context)
.data("https://example.com/image.jpg")     
.crossfade(true)     
.target(new ImageViewTarget(imageView))   
 .build();  

imageLoader.enqueue(request);

I am still looking for a proper solution about the missing of the ImageLoaders.executeBlocking.

@nerocristallo Calling executeBlocking from Java is covered in the docs here. It's possible to call any of Kotlin's extension functions from Java using the [filename]Kt.[methodname] syntax.

I can see the documentation, but I cannot find an ImageLoaders class to import.
I can import an ImageLoadersKt class, but this does not contain an executeBlocking() method.

The executeBlocking is present only in ImageLoaders_nonJsCommonKt class but I do not know if it is right or not.

There is probably something wrong with my project, but I cannot identify the issue. All of the other Coil3 v3.2.0 imports seem to work properly.

Rolling back to version 2.7.0, everything works fine.

You're right sorry this looks like a bug. During the migration to Coil 3.x and multiplatform, the file was renamed. It's currently accessible via ImageLoaders_nonJsCommonKt.executeBlocking, but I'll fix it in the next version to restore the ImageLoaders.executeBlocking syntax.
